The Himalaya’s Trek October 2017

That it is not necessary to go to the summit of a mountain to achieve something special is definitely proven by the Himalayas Trek. India is probably on everyone’s list of special places to see. It certainly has been on mine.Earth’s Edge have organised a fantastic trekking experience in Northern India. While categorised as moderate, it is challenging. The reward is amazing scenery, warm climate and closeness to the lifestyles of local people in their small villages and communities.

We were greeted by very friendly and curious families. “Namaste” is a word we have heard. It is a greeting to indicate a recognition that we are kindred spirits on this earth and that we respect each other. It became part of our daily vocabulary. Each day brought different sights, forests, waterfalls, birds of prey, mountains and valleys. The sight of snow covered mountain peaks higher than 7000 metres was suddenly revealed at Kuari pass. It is breathtaking to see!

After six great trekking days, we had well deserved showers in a local hotel. Our visit to India coincided with the celebration of the festival of Diwali, the Hindu festival of light. We were invited to attend and participate in a ceremony in our hotel. It was such a privilege and a sharing of culture. Any anxieties or fears of white water rafting were quickly relieved. It was amazing and a further challenge to our already established team approach to the expedition. Hindu belief is that bathing in the Ganges purifies your soul. After 26 kilometres of rafting we were well purified. In the very capable hands of our guides, we rafted to the city of Rishikesh. It is the yoga capital of India and is where the Beatles spent some timeout in 1969. It’s a place definitely worth seeing.

I’m delighted that our group stayed healthy and with our strict adherence to hygiene there were no “belly” problems. As always with Earth’s Edge organised expeditions, food was excellent.

I would highly recommend the Himalayas Trek. Put it on your list of special things to do!
