Overview

Adventure changes lives. For many, climbing Kilimanjaro is where that change begins.

As Ireland’s most trusted expedition company, Earth’s Edge leads carefully supported climbs of Africa’s highest mountain, combining expert local guiding, expedition doctors, and a strong sense of team. This is a journey designed not just to reach the summit, but to help people discover what they are capable of along the way.

Since 2007, we’ve guided thousands of people to some of the world’s most iconic summits, from Kilimanjaro to Aconcagua. Our Kilimanjaro expeditions are led by highly experienced local mountain guides and supported by a qualified expedition doctor, ensuring every climber is cared for at altitude.

Our approach is defined by preparation, support, and community. From the first briefing to summit day, we are with you every step of the way.

Why Climb Kilimanjaro with Earth’s Edge

At Earth’s Edge, we believe how you climb Kilimanjaro matters just as much as reaching the summit.

Expedition doctors at altitude are a bedrock of our service and our safety standards. Having a doctor on the mountain allows us to closely monitor acclimatisation, respond early to any medical issues, and support climbers with confidence and reassurance throughout the expedition.

Before travelling to Tanzania, every climber is invited to take part in a training weekend in Ireland, led by our expert guides. These weekends are designed to build confidence and community, offering practical advice on training, packing, pacing, and what to expect on the mountain. You arrive on Kilimanjaro prepared, informed, and part of a team.

From the moment you sign up, you become part of the Earth’s Edge team. Each climber receives an Earth’s Edge team jacket ahead of departure, a practical piece of kit designed for the mountain, and a reminder that your journey begins long before you arrive in Tanzania.

Our commitment to care defines how we travel. We operate with smaller group sizes, build stronger teams, and work closely with the communities who make our expeditions possible. As a proud Irish B Corp, we are dedicated to protecting the planet and supporting local staff through fair pay and responsible practices.

Our goal is simple: to help people grow physically, mentally, and emotionally through extraordinary adventures. Whether Kilimanjaro is your first major trek or your biggest challenge yet, we are there to support you from preparation, to summit and beyond.

Climbing Kilimanjaro – 7 Day Machame Route

Mount Kilimanjaro is not only Africa’s tallest mountain, standing at 5,896 m, but also the highest free-standing mountain in the world. Formed around the massive volcanic crater known as Kibo, it rises dramatically from the surrounding plains and offers one of the world’s most rewarding high-altitude trekking experiences.

Our 10-day itinerary includes seven days of trekking on the scenic Machame Route, one of Kilimanjaro’s most beautiful and effective routes for acclimatisation. This slower pace allows the body time to adapt to altitude and significantly increases the chances of a successful summit. This trek is suitable for people with a good level of fitness, and no mountaineering experience is required.

The Machame Route is rich in biodiversity and ever-changing landscapes. From low scrublands and lush rainforest, you ascend through moorland and alpine tundra, before crossing scree slopes and passing glaciers on your final push to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro.

All of our Kilimanjaro expeditions are supported by an incredible team of local guides and porters, whose experience, strength, and support are central to every successful climb.

Unlike most operators, we spend our final night before summit day at Kosovo Camp, a quieter camp located 120 m higher than Barafu Camp. This reduces summit night by up to an hour, making for a more efficient and manageable ascent.

Each day on the mountain is shaped by teamwork and atmosphere, from the steady rhythm of the trail to the energy of local song and encouragement. After the climb, you’ll enjoy a free day to relax and recover by the pool, or choose to join an optional one-day safari in Tarangire National Park.

Facts

About Mount Kilimanjaro

Kilimanjaro lies within the 756-square-kilometre Kilimanjaro National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and is one of the few places on earth where you can experience five major ecological zones on a single trek: rain forest, heath, moorland, alpine desert and glaciers.

The mountain is formed by three volcanic cones: Shira, Mawenzi, and Kibo. While you pass Shira on the approach, it is Uhuru Peak on Kibo that marks the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro and the highest point in Africa.

Porter Welfare

Porter welfare is central to how we operate on Kilimanjaro.

Climbing Kilimanjaro relies on the skill, strength, and experience of local porters, and we believe they deserve to be treated with fairness, dignity, and respect. Earth’s Edge works closely with our local partners to ensure high standards of care, fair pay, appropriate equipment, and safe working conditions for every member of our mountain team.

We are a proud partner of the Kilimanjaro Porters Assistance Project (KPAP), an independent organisation that promotes ethical treatment of porters on Kilimanjaro. KPAP sends trained investigators on all our Kilimanjaro expeditions to independently monitor porter welfare, including wages, load weights, food, clothing, and overall working conditions.

Choosing to climb with Earth’s Edge means supporting a responsible approach that protects both the mountain and the people who make these expeditions possible.

Best time to climb Kilimanjaro

In Tanzania, there are two wet seasons and two dry seasons. The "long rains" run from March through May and the "short rains" run from November to mid-December. Outside these times is considered the dry season. It can still rain during the dry season but statistically, it is much drier. This makes January, February and June through to October the best time to climb the mountain.

What you need to climb Kilimanjaro

We have an extensive packing list on what you should bring with you when hiking Kilimanjaro.

How to prepare to climb Kilimanjaro

We have classified Kilimanjaro as a level 5 expedition. We expect participants to have a very good level of fitness. Although this is not a technical climb, it is very steep in places and you will be gaining height very quickly. The group moves at a comfortable pace and nobody is ever left behind. Nevertheless, it is your responsibility to contact us if you have any concerns regarding your level of fitness, health or ability to complete the trek. We strongly recommend that you read our Kilimanjaro information pack, which gives in detail on how you should prepare for climbing the tallest free standing mountain in the world.
