How Hard is it to Climb Mt. Kenya?

And is the rest of the Kenya Tri-Adventure for me?

If you’re wondering how hard it is to climb Mt. Kenya, the good news is: it’s more doable than you might think! In fact, when it comes to big mountain adventures, climbing Mt. Kenya is one of the most accessible and rewarding challenges out there. The trekking summit (Point Lenana, 4,985m) is Africa’s sixth-highest peak, and is far more accessible than many people think. With some preparation, a sense of adventure, and a good pair of boots, climbing Mt. Kenya is well within reach!

Reaching the top of Point Lenana offers a serious altitude challenge, but you don’t need technical climbing skills to get there. Mt. Kenya offers a brilliant introduction to high-altitude trekking. Unlike its more famous neighbour, Kilimanjaro, Mt. Kenya sees far fewer tourists, which makes for a more peaceful and rewarding experience. The trails are varied, the scenery is absolutely stunning, and the pace is manageable – pole pole (slowly, slowly) is the name of the game. The 5-day route also allows for gradual acclimatisation (although it has the shortest trekking time of any trip we offer!). It’s a proper mountain adventure, without being out of reach for regular hikers.

So, How Hard is Climbing Mt. Kenya Really?

Mt. Kenya is tough, yes – but not too tough. It’s a solid physical challenge, especially on summit day when you’re up before sunrise and trekking for up to 16 hours. But here’s the thing: the route builds gradually over several days, allowing your body time to adjust to the altitude. With a bit of hillwalking under your belt and a decent level of fitness, you’ll be surprised by what you can achieve.

We recommend regular hiking in the months leading up to the trip – ideally including back-to-back long hikes (6-8 hours) with a weighted rucksack in order to replicate the climbing conditions. The better prepared you are, the more you’ll enjoy every moment of the climb!
